Lost Keys — Same-Visit Rekey

You were shovelling the driveway after dark and the ring must have slid out of your coat pocket somewhere under a metre of snow. You have raked the whole bank with a flashlight.

In plain words

A missing key is also the moment a household can stop carrying four. Because a rekey sets a fresh combination in every cylinder anyway, the locksmith can set the same combination in all of them, provided they share a keyway family, so the front door, back door, garage entry and side gate open with one key. Where a cylinder belongs to a different family, it can be swapped for one that matches during the same visit. The result is a single key on each ring, fewer copies to keep track of, and the certainty that the lost one operates none of them.

Sound familiar?

The keys fell out of a gym bag somewhere between the arena and the parking lot. The ring has a tag from the building with the unit number on it. Whoever finds it has an address and a key that fits.

How the visit goes

How the visit goes

Technician with a yellow cordless drill and thin screwdriver bit fastening a brass-colored lock plate on a dark paneled front door.
  1. 1

Where the tenant and landlord line falls

Rented and shared buildings add a boundary that the locksmith maps early. A tenant's suite door is theirs to use but a lock change is agreed with the landlord, who receives keys as well. A condominium suite cylinder may sit on the building's master system, so its rekey is planned so the master still works, and the lobby, garage and amenity doors stay with the corporation. A small business rekeying a shop door checks what the lease says about the landlord holding a key. Sorting this out on the doorstep keeps every party informed and lets the work proceed with no surprise phone calls the following week.

  2. 2

Removing the cylinder without disturbing the door

Each cylinder comes off in the way its lock allows, and the door itself is never cut or drilled. A knob or lever lock releases its cylinder once the knob is slipped off its spindle and a retaining clip or cap is eased back. A deadbolt cylinder comes out when the interior thumb-turn assembly is unscrewed and the housing lifts away. A mortise cylinder in an older door backs out after its small set screw is loosened, and a rim cylinder on a night latch unscrews from its back plate. Each piece is set aside with its own screws so the door goes back together exactly as it was.

  3. 3

The old key is now a piece of brass

Whatever became of the lost key, it stopped mattering the moment the last cylinder went back on the door. It still slides into the keyway, because the keyway did not change, but the pins inside no longer line up with its cuts, so it turns nothing. Whoever finds it in a snowbank in April, or already has it in a drawer, holds a shape that fits your lock and does nothing to it. That is the whole purpose of the visit, and it is worth pausing on: the worry that started the day has a definite ending, and you can watch it demonstrated with the old key in your own hand.

What affects the quote

  1. 1

Whether the doors can share one key as they are

Cylinders from the same keyway family are pinned alike with no extra parts. A door from a different family needs a compatible cylinder swapped in if you want a single key, and that part is quoted separately.

  2. 2

    Restricted or high-security keyways

Patented and high-security cylinders carry more parts, need dedicated pin kits and issue keys through authorised channels. Rekeying them takes longer and the blanks cost more than common residential ones.

  3. 3

    Upgrades chosen during the visit

Some people take the moment to move to a heavier deadbolt, a restricted keyway, a reinforced strike or a lockbox for the spare. None of it is required; each option is a separate line.

Same fees day, night or weekend.

Lost Keys — Same-Visit Rekey: questions

Advice · (289) 816-4986

My key fell in the snow in my own yard. Do I still need to rekey?

It is your call, and it is a reasonable one either way. A key lost on your own property is unlikely to be picked up by a stranger, but it will surface in the spring thaw, and until then you are trusting a guess about where it lies. Many households rekey anyway for the certainty, and because the visit also lets them put every door on one key while the locksmith is there.

My lock is the homeowner-rekeyable type but the working key is lost. Can it still be reset?

Yes. Those cylinders let an owner change the key with a small learn tool, but only while a working key is in hand. Without one, a design such as Kwikset SmartKey is removed and placed in its own reset fixture, returning it to a blank state; other cylinder types are rekeyed by their own method instead. A new key is then set and the lock goes back on. It is a few extra minutes rather than a replacement.

Do I need to be there for the whole visit?

An authorised adult should be present at the start, for identification and to agree the list of doors and the number of keys, and at the end, to test every key and take the count. In between, the work happens at the doors and on the van, so you are free to get on with your day inside. A property manager or a family member with your authorisation can stand in if you cannot be there.

What the census means at the door

47%

Homes of every age. About 47% of homes in Burlington were built in 1980 or earlier, according to the 2021 Census.

In neighbourhoods with a mix of older and newer homes, the finishes on the doors vary widely: aged brass, satin nickel, matte black. A locksmith serving such an area keeps a range of finishes so replacement hardware suits each house.

50%

A mix of homes. Single-detached houses make up about 50% of homes in Burlington (2021 Census).

Where housing is mixed, the same street can hold a solid wood front door, a steel townhouse door and a metal-clad suite door. A locksmith fits each with hardware suited to its construction, so every neighbour ends up with a door that locks properly.
