What's happening right now?

Locked out

Safely, right now

  1. Wait somewhere safe and warm: a neighbour's, your car, a coffee shop.
  2. Don't force a window or the door; it only adds a repair.
  3. Have a photo ID with your address ready if you can.

Key broke in the lock

Safely, right now

  1. Leave the lock alone: pushing the piece further in makes it harder to get out.
  2. Hold on to the half you have; it helps with a new key.

Lock won't turn

Safely, right now

  1. Don't force the key. A bent or broken key makes it harder.
  2. Don't spray oil or glue into it, and don't pour hot water on it in the cold.

Lost keys

Safely, right now

  1. Keys lost together with your address? Assume someone could use them.
  2. Don't hide a spare key anywhere outside in the meantime, not even under the mat.

Living in a building in Glenwood Park means two kinds of doors: the suite door you control and the common doors the building manages. We service both, working within house rules on the outer hardware and giving your own door a cylinder, strike and closer that suit how the unit is actually used.

The fix, explained · Glenwood Park

What is the door doing?

EmergencyHome Lockout ServiceYou reached the front step with the groceries, patted every pocket twice, and the house key is simply not there.

The fix

Being locked out is uncomfortable, but it is also the moment most households finally sort out their keys. Once the door is open, the same visit can rekey the locks so a lost key stops mattering, cut properly coded spares to replace worn copies, key the front and back doors alike so one key runs the house, or set up a small…

EmergencyBusiness Lockout ServiceYou signed the lease on the unit last week and the landlord handed over possession, but the previous tenant's locks are still on both doors and no…

The fix

A locked business loses trading time, so the visit is arranged around getting people back to work. The locksmith opens the door first and settles the cause second: a snapped key is extracted and the cylinder checked, a lost key leads to rekeying while staff open up, a failed deadlatch spring is replaced before the door is…

EmergencyBroken Key ExtractionThe apartment key snapped mid-turn, leaving the cylinder twisted halfway between locked and open.

The fix

The tools are simple and precise. A hook extractor is a thin strip of spring steel with a barb at the tip; it slides along the groove of the keyway above or below the fragment, snags one of the cuts, and walks it out.

EmergencyBreak-In Damage Lock RepairYou came home to find the front door standing open.

The fix

A failed break-in is still a repair. When a lock holds against a pry bar or a kick, the force goes somewhere: a strike plate bends, screws loosen, the door edge takes a gouge, the deadbolt binds where the bolt met the strike under load.

EmergencySeized & Jammed Lock OpeningYou are inside, the deadbolt is thrown, and the thumb-turn will not budge.

The fix

Most seized locks can be saved, and keeping your existing hardware is the aim. A cylinder that has stopped turning is usually recoverable with cleaning and fresh internal parts.

EmergencyLost Keys — Same-Visit RekeyYou were shovelling the driveway after dark and the ring must have slid out of your coat pocket somewhere under a metre of snow.

The fix

A missing key is also the moment a household can stop carrying four. Because a rekey sets a fresh combination in every cylinder anyway, the locksmith can set the same combination in all of them, provided they share a keyway family, so the front door, back door, garage entry and side gate open with one key.

Ask about a spare key before you need one.

Describe the property, the hardware and what has changed, and the visit starts from what you have seen.

    Deciding what to replace

We look at the existing lock, the door thickness and the holes already drilled. Sometimes a new cylinder is enough; sometimes the whole lockset has earned its retirement.

    Checking fit and finish

Fitting the new hardware. The new lock goes in with the strike adjusted so the bolt throws fully. If the old holes need filling or enlarging, that is done neatly.

Checking fit and finish. We test the lock with the door open and closed, from both sides, check the key turns without effort and clean up the doorstep before leaving.

What the census means at the door

47%

Homes of every age. About 47% of homes in Burlington were built in 1980 or earlier, according to the 2021 Census.

In an area of varied housing ages, rekeying is the one job that fits every door. Old cylinders and new ones both take fresh pins, so a household moving into either kind of home can start with keys that nobody else holds.

50%

A mix of homes. Single-detached houses make up about 50% of homes in Burlington (2021 Census).

Neighbourhoods of houses beside townhouses and low-rise buildings have a range of door constructions: solid wood, steel, fibreglass and metal-clad. A locksmith who works in such an area is used to fitting hardware to all of them without new holes.

Lock work makes brass shavings, sawdust and small parts that roll under furniture. In Glenwood Park homes we lay a drop sheet, catch what falls, and vacuum before we go. The door gets wiped down, the old keys are handed back or taken away as you prefer, and the only sign we were there is a lock that turns without complaint.

Burlington, Brant Hills, Clarksdale, Freeman, Highview Survey, Mountain Gardens, Palmer and Tyandaga

  • Plain words. We talk about pins, cylinders and strikes only when it helps you understand. Otherwise it is 'this is why the door sticks and here is what fixes it'.

  • Respect for your door. We treat an old wooden door or a new steel one as yours, not as a project. Non-destructive methods come first, and we ask before drilling anything.

  • Knowing what you are left with. Before we leave, you will know exactly what changed, how many keys exist and what to keep an eye on. Nothing is left as a mystery.

What to expect, answered

Advice · (289) 816-4986

My key turns all the way round but the bolt stays put. What has broken?

The key and cylinder are doing their job; the bar behind the cylinder that drives the bolt, called the tailpiece or cam, has broken, slipped or twisted out of engagement. It is a small part. The locksmith retracts the bolt through the mechanism or removes the cylinder to reach it, then fits a tailpiece of the right length and profile. Your cylinder and keys are unchanged afterwards.

Can my interior doors be serviced too, and can one key work all of them?

Usually yes to the first, and to the second once the locksmith checks the locks. Interior mortise latches with privacy turn buttons are lighter versions of the entry lock and respond to the same clean and re-spring. Interior locks in a house were sometimes supplied to one bit key, and where the key sections, warding and levers actually match, the locksmith can restore that arrangement so a single key opens several bedroom and bathroom doors. It is a practical thing to have when a child locks a bathroom from inside.

Will the new lock match my existing door hardware?

Smart locks come in the same finish families as ordinary hardware: satin nickel, matte black, aged bronze, polished brass and chrome. The locksmith matches the finish to your handle set, or swaps the handle at the same time so the door reads as one piece. Where an old finish has weathered to a shade no new part will match, replacing the knob or lever alongside the deadbolt is the tidy answer, and the two are often sold as a matching pair.

Is a mechanical dial or an electronic keypad the better choice for a business safe?

Each suits a different way of working. A mechanical dial has no battery to fail and a long service life, but only ever holds one combination at a time. An electronic keypad allows separate codes for different staff and an audit trail on some models, at the cost of needing battery changes. Either can be fitted with a genuinely high security rating; the choice usually comes down to how many people need independent access.
