What's happening right now?

Locked out

Safely, right now

  1. Wait somewhere safe and warm: a neighbour's, your car, a coffee shop.
  2. Don't force a window or the door; it only adds a repair.
  3. Have a photo ID with your address ready if you can.

Key broke in the lock

Safely, right now

  1. Leave the lock alone: pushing the piece further in makes it harder to get out.
  2. Hold on to the half you have; it helps with a new key.

Lock won't turn

Safely, right now

  1. Don't force the key. A bent or broken key makes it harder.
  2. Don't spray oil or glue into it, and don't pour hot water on it in the cold.

Lost keys

Safely, right now

  1. Keys lost together with your address? Assume someone could use them.
  2. Don't hide a spare key anywhere outside in the meantime, not even under the mat.

Lock work makes brass shavings, sawdust and small screws that roll under furniture. We put a drop sheet down, catch the mess, and vacuum before we go. Homeowners in Clarksdale should be able to tell we were there only by the way the door now locks, not by anything left behind.

The fix, explained · Clarksdale

What is the door doing?

EmergencyHome Lockout ServiceYou reached the front step with the groceries, patted every pocket twice, and the house key is simply not there.

The fix

Being locked out is uncomfortable, but it is also the moment most households finally sort out their keys. Once the door is open, the same visit can rekey the locks so a lost key stops mattering, cut properly coded spares to replace worn copies, key the front and back doors alike so one key runs the house, or set up a small…

EmergencyBusiness Lockout ServiceYou signed the lease on the unit last week and the landlord handed over possession, but the previous tenant's locks are still on both doors and no…

The fix

A locked business loses trading time, so the visit is arranged around getting people back to work. The locksmith opens the door first and settles the cause second: a snapped key is extracted and the cylinder checked, a lost key leads to rekeying while staff open up, a failed deadlatch spring is replaced before the door is…

EmergencyBroken Key ExtractionThe apartment key snapped mid-turn, leaving the cylinder twisted halfway between locked and open.

The fix

The tools are simple and precise. A hook extractor is a thin strip of spring steel with a barb at the tip; it slides along the groove of the keyway above or below the fragment, snags one of the cuts, and walks it out.

EmergencyBreak-In Damage Lock RepairYou came home to find the front door standing open.

The fix

A failed break-in is still a repair. When a lock holds against a pry bar or a kick, the force goes somewhere: a strike plate bends, screws loosen, the door edge takes a gouge, the deadbolt binds where the bolt met the strike under load.

EmergencySeized & Jammed Lock OpeningYou are inside, the deadbolt is thrown, and the thumb-turn will not budge.

The fix

Most seized locks can be saved, and keeping your existing hardware is the aim. A cylinder that has stopped turning is usually recoverable with cleaning and fresh internal parts.

EmergencyLost Keys — Same-Visit RekeyYou were shovelling the driveway after dark and the ring must have slid out of your coat pocket somewhere under a metre of snow.

The fix

A missing key is also the moment a household can stop carrying four. Because a rekey sets a fresh combination in every cylinder anyway, the locksmith can set the same combination in all of them, provided they share a keyway family, so the front door, back door, garage entry and side gate open with one key.

How a visit goes

  1. 1 Call

Ask about a spare key before you need one.

Describe the property, the hardware and what has changed, and the visit starts from what you have seen.

    (289) 816-4986 · open 24/7

  2. 2 Questions

    Deciding what to replace

We look at the existing lock, the door thickness and the holes already drilled. Sometimes a new cylinder is enough; sometimes the whole lockset has earned its retirement.

  3. 3 On the way

    In the van

Clarksdale to Brant Hills, Clarksdale, Freeman, Glenwood Park, Highview Survey, Mountain Gardens, Palmer and Tyandaga.

    • Lock de-icer
    • Latch and bypass tools
    • Dry graphite or PTFE lubricant
    • Strike plate and long hinge screws
    • Key blanks and key cutter
  4. 4 Fixed

    Checking fit and finish

Fitting the new hardware. The new lock goes in with the strike adjusted so the bolt throws fully. If the old holes need filling or enlarging, that is done neatly.

Checking fit and finish. We test the lock with the door open and closed, from both sides, check the key turns without effort and clean up the doorstep before leaving.

What the census means at the door

47%

Homes of every age. About 47% of homes in Burlington were built in 1980 or earlier, according to the 2021 Census.

Where housing ages are mixed, some homes have never had a deadbolt and others have two. The visit starts with a look at what is already there, and the recommendation might be adding a lock on one house and simply tuning it on the next.

50%

A mix of homes. Single-detached houses make up about 50% of homes in Burlington (2021 Census).

Mixed housing means a locksmith sees a bungalow in the morning and a condo tower in the afternoon. The stocked van has house-door deadbolts, suite-door cylinders and the finishes for each, so neither kind of customer waits for a second visit.

A visit to Clarksdale ends with a walkthrough. You should be able to use every part of the door without calling us back to ask how.

Burlington, Brant Hills, Freeman, Glenwood Park, Highview Survey, Mountain Gardens, Palmer and Tyandaga

  • Plain words. We talk about pins, cylinders and strikes only when it helps you understand. Otherwise it is 'this is why the door sticks and here is what fixes it'.

  • Respect for your door. We treat an old wooden door or a new steel one as yours, not as a project. Non-destructive methods come first, and we ask before drilling anything.

  • Knowing what you are left with. Before we leave, you will know exactly what changed, how many keys exist and what to keep an eye on. Nothing is left as a mystery.

What to expect, answered

Advice · (289) 816-4986

Should I rekey when I move into a new home?

It is the single most common reason to rekey, and a sensible one. A resale home has typically passed through owners, agents, inspectors, cleaners and trades, any of whom may have had a key cut. A newly built home has been opened by construction crews using a builder's key. Rekeying on move-in means the only working keys are yours, and the same visit can bring every exterior door onto a single key, retiring the assorted keys you inherited.

I rent. Can I have a deadbolt installed on my unit door?

You can, with a conversation first. Tenancy rules in this province expect a tenant to have the landlord's consent before changing locks and expect the landlord to hold a key, so ask in writing and share the plan. Many landlords welcome a proper bolt. The locksmith can key the new cylinder to the building's existing key where the keyway allows, and leave a note of the model and keys cut for the building manager.

Can you install a safe I already bought somewhere else?

Yes. Bringing your own unit is common, and the installation itself does not depend on where the safe came from. The locksmith still needs to check its weight, its footprint, and its anchor points against the floor or wall it will sit on, and looks over the lock before calling the job complete, since a new-to-you safe occasionally arrives with a stiff mechanism or a combination still set from the factory.

What is the difference between restricted and patented keys?

A restricted keyway is one the manufacturer supplies to a limited set of dealers, so blanks are harder to obtain but not legally protected. A patented key design is protected by a patent for a fixed term, and making or selling the blank without permission is unlawful during that time. Patented systems give the firmer control; restricted ones give a useful step up. The locksmith explains which your chosen line uses and when any patent expires.
