Smart Lock Installation

There are four copies of the front-door key floating around: one with the cleaner, one with a neighbour, one on a hook at your parents' place, and one you honestly cannot account for. You would rather hand out codes you can switch off.

In plain words

For a landlord, a host or anyone who shares a door with people who come and go, the appeal is control without key cutting. Each tenant, guest, cleaner or contractor gets a code of their own, with a start and end date where the model allows, and removing someone takes seconds instead of a trip across town. The installation includes setting up that structure: an owner account, a small register of who holds what, and a routine for retiring codes at turnover. In a rented home the change is agreed with the tenant or landlord first, since both sides need a working way in.

How the visit goes

Technician with a yellow cordless drill and thin screwdriver bit fastening a brass-colored lock plate on a dark paneled front door.
  1. 1

Will the bolt travel on its own?

The most important test takes moments and uses no tools. With the door closed and nobody touching it, the locksmith turns the existing thumb-turn with two fingers and feels whether the bolt glides into the strike or has to be forced. A motor has less strength than a hand, so any drag here is drag the smart lock will fight every day until its batteries give out. Hinges that have let the door drop, a strike pocket that is shallow or off-centre, and weatherstrip that pushes the door out of square are the usual culprits, and each is something the locksmith can correct before the new hardware goes on.

  2. 2

Power up and teach the lock its door

Once the hardware is tight, the lock gets the batteries its maker specifies, all fresh and all the same type, since mixing old and new cells shortens the life of the set. Most models then run a short calibration in which the motor learns which way is locked, how far the bolt travels and where it meets resistance. The locksmith runs this exactly as that model's instructions direct, door open or closed depending on the maker, then cycles it several times from the keypad and the thumb-turn while listening for a motor that strains. If the lock has a door-position sensor or a magnet to fit on the frame, it is placed and confirmed at this stage.

  3. 3

A cleaner handover at the next turnover

For a rental or a shared home, the real payoff arrives at the next change of occupant. Instead of collecting keys and wondering about copies, you delete the departing tenant's code, add one for the incoming tenant and confirm the change in the app. The small register the locksmith helped you start shows who still has access and which codes are due to expire. Any guest, cleaner or contractor codes that belong to the old arrangement go at the same time. The override key stays under your control and is handed over or rekeyed as the tenancy rules and your own preference require, so the door changes hands with nothing left behind.

What affects the quote

  1. 1

    Finish and matching hardware

Standard finishes are the base. A less common finish, or replacing the knob or lever at the same time so the door matches, adds to the hardware portion of the quote.

  2. 2

Rekeying the override cylinder and other locks

Repinning the smart lock's backup cylinder to a new key, cutting the keys and bringing the remaining mechanical locks onto the same key are each counted per cylinder and per key.

  3. 3

    Supplying the lock yourself

If you have already bought a lock, the quote covers fitting and setup only, with a note on whether the chosen model suits your door; if the locksmith supplies it, the hardware is listed alongside.

Smart Lock Installation: questions

Advice · (289) 816-4986

The house came with a smart lock. Can you make it mine?

Yes, and it is treated as a fresh installation rather than a hand-me-down. The lock is reset to factory settings using the maker's procedure, which wipes codes, schedules and paired phones, then enrolled to an account you create. Anything else that could open it, such as a hub or a voice assistant, gets its own check, because those permissions sit outside the lock. The override cylinder is rekeyed, batteries replaced and firmware updated. If the hardware is worn, replacing it is the cleaner choice.

Will the new lock match my existing door hardware?

Smart locks come in the same finish families as ordinary hardware: satin nickel, matte black, aged bronze, polished brass and chrome. The locksmith matches the finish to your handle set, or swaps the handle at the same time so the door reads as one piece. Where an old finish has weathered to a shade no new part will match, replacing the knob or lever alongside the deadbolt is the tidy answer, and the two are often sold as a matching pair.

What information should I have ready when I call?

The door's material and rough thickness, what lock is on it now and whether it is a separate deadbolt above a knob or lever, and whether there is a storm door. Say what you want the lock to do: codes only, phone control, alerts, auto-lock. Mention how the Wi-Fi is at the front door if you know, whether you rent or own, and how many people need their own way in. A photo of the inside and outside of the existing lock is a real help.

What the census means at the door

47%

Homes of every age. About 47% of homes in Burlington were built in 1980 or earlier, according to the 2021 Census.

In neighbourhoods with a mix of older and newer homes, the finishes on the doors vary widely: aged brass, satin nickel, matte black. A locksmith serving such an area keeps a range of finishes so replacement hardware suits each house.

50%

A mix of homes. Single-detached houses make up about 50% of homes in Burlington (2021 Census).

Where housing is mixed, the same street can hold a solid wood front door, a steel townhouse door and a metal-clad suite door. A locksmith fits each with hardware suited to its construction, so every neighbour ends up with a door that locks properly.
