How long does a business lockout take?
It depends on the hardware and what else is wired to it. A standard storefront cylinder or office lever on a well-hung door is often a short job once authority is confirmed. A high-security cylinder, a frozen lock, a dropped door or a dead access controller adds time, and so does rekeying several doors afterwards. The locksmith gives you a realistic idea on the phone once you describe the door and the situation.
My key turns all the way round but the bolt stays put. What has broken?
The key and cylinder are doing their job; the bar behind the cylinder that drives the bolt, called the tailpiece or cam, has broken, slipped or twisted out of engagement. It is a small part. A standard strike is a thin plate held by two short screws in the jamb, and the jamb is what splits when a door is forced. A reinforced strike or strike box is heavier and is fixed with long screws that pass through the jamb into the framing, spreading the load into the structure. It is one of the most effective upgrades on any exterior door and is usually fitted as part of a deadbolt replacement.
