When does a locksmith decide to drill instead of pick?
Drilling is the last rung, reached only when the cylinder has genuinely stopped cooperating. Typical reasons are a plug seized by corrosion or a failed spring, a key snapped deep inside that blocks the pins, a high-security cylinder whose anti-pick features make picking impractical, or a lock already damaged by someone's earlier attempt. The decision is explained before the drill comes out, the hole is confined to the cylinder, and replacement hardware goes in straight afterwards. Home Lockout Service
Can we put a keyed deadbolt on both sides of the back door for extra security?
On a door people leave through while the building is occupied, the door needs to open from inside with one motion and no key, so a key-both-sides bolt is not the right tool there. Security is added instead with a heavy-duty exit device and a reinforced strike, a keyed trim outside, an alarm contact, or a door position sensor on the access system, all of which keep the way out clear. Will the lock work again once the piece is out?
In most cases yes, and it is tested in front of you with a key that fits. The inspection after extraction is where the honest answer lives: if the pins, springs and cap are sound and the keyway is clean, the cylinder goes back into service with a fresh key. If wear or damage caused the break, that is explained and a rekey or new cylinder is offered as a separate choice. Broken Key Extraction
Can a split jamb be repaired, or does it need replacing?
Many can be repaired. A split along the grain is pressed back together, glued with a two-part wood epoxy and held by a steel repair plate or a boxed strike screwed through it into the stud, so the fasteners reinforce the repair as well as the lock. Missing wood is built up with filler or a fitted piece. A jamb that has pulled off the framing along its length or shattered around the pocket is replaced by a carpenter, with the opening secured until then. Break-In Damage Lock Repair

Can a smart lock or keypad deadbolt be rekeyed?
The mechanical part of it can. Many keypad or app-controlled deadbolts hide a small keyed cylinder under a cap for the day the batteries fail, and that cylinder can be pinned to your house key so the backup key on your ring is the same one that opens the other doors; some models are key-free and rely on an external battery backup instead. Codes are a separate matter: the locksmith will suggest deleting any code belonging to someone who no longer needs access at the same time. Lock Rekeying
Should I choose a single-cylinder or a double-cylinder deadbolt?
For any door people leave the house through, a single cylinder with an inside thumb-turn is the sensible choice, and provincial building rules for dwellings call for exit doors that open from inside without a key. Double-cylinder bolts are keyed on both faces and are sometimes proposed where glass is near the lock, but a captive thumb-turn, laminated glass, or a tested security-film system with its specified attachment, addresses that without a key on the inside. I have just bought a house. What should I do about the locks?
Assume that copies of the old keys exist somewhere and act on the day you take possession. Walk every exterior door with the locksmith, keep hardware that is sound and have it rekeyed to a new key, replace hardware that is worn or too light, and add a deadbolt to any door that lacks one. Ask for everything to be keyed alike so you leave with one key and a known number of copies. Lock Replacement & Upgrade
Can a modern cylinder be fitted to my old mortise lock?
Often, on cases that already take a threaded cylinder. Mortise cylinders are made in standard thread sizes and lengths with different cam shapes, and a new one is selected to match the case and the door thickness. That gives you keys cut on a machine and the option of keying the door alike with the rest of the house. A bit-key case has no cylinder to swap; its keys are made on the bench instead. What happens to the hole if my safe has to be drilled?
It is closed with a repair plug or patch plate matched to the case material and finish before the visit ends, aiming to leave one small, professionally finished repair rather than an open hole, with the exact result depending on the safe's construction and the approved repair method used. If the drilled point affected the safe's original security rating, that is explained plainly, along with whether the replacement lock restores it to its prior level. Safe Opening & Combination Change
Will you service a safe that another company installed?
Yes, servicing does not depend on who did the original installation. The locksmith opens the bolt-work, tests the lock through a full cycle, checks the anchoring underneath, and replaces batteries in an electronic lock as needed, regardless of the brand or who fitted it originally. Not knowing the history of the unit just means a slightly more thorough first look before any work begins. Safe Installation & Servicing
Will the new cylinder fit my existing locks?
Usually. High security cylinders are made in the common formats: key-in-knob and lever, rim, mortise and interchangeable core, and many are designed to drop into popular residential and commercial locks. The locksmith identifies your format and confirms fit before ordering. Where a lock is an odd size or in poor shape, a matching lock body is fitted instead, and the door preparation is reused wherever it is standard. High Security Locks

What do you do with the old keys?
They are gathered, tested at each rekeyed door to confirm they no longer work, and then cut through so they can never be used or copied. You can keep the pieces or the locksmith takes them away. Any old key that still operates a door you chose to leave unchanged is handed back and noted on the chart, so it is clear which keys remain live and which are scrap. Commercial Rekeying
Can different lock brands be mixed in one master key system?
Sometimes, but it depends on the keyway and pinning platform each brand uses; some are compatible with one another and some are not. Where a mix already exists on a property, the assessment identifies which cylinders can be brought into a single hierarchy and which need replacing with a matching platform so every level pins correctly across the whole set of doors. Master Key System Design
Will this work with our existing alarm or camera system?
In most cases, yes. An access control installation can be planned to share information with an existing alarm panel, so an arm-or-disarm event lines up with whoever unlocked the door, and with a camera system, so a recorded clip can be matched to a specific credential rather than only a timestamp. The exact integration depends on what the existing alarm and camera equipment support. Access Control Installation
How high should the crossbar or touchpad be mounted?
Exit-device makers publish a mounting range for their own models, and in practice a crossbar or touchpad sits no higher than about 1200 mm above the finished floor. The locksmith sets the hardware inside the maker's range and below that ceiling, allowing for anyone in the space who needs a lower reach, a wheelchair user or a shorter staff member among them. Car Keys
Is an older car easier or harder to open than a new one?
Different rather than easier. An older car usually has a cylinder in every door and simple linkages, so picking or decoding the lock is routine. A newer car may hide its cylinder, has doors full of electronics that call for wedge-and-reach rather than anything inside the door, and adds an immobiliser to any lost-key work. Either way the locksmith chooses the method by the model, not by guesswork. Car Lockout Service
My fob is cracked but still works. Do I need a whole new key?
Usually not. A cracked case often protects a healthy circuit board and transponder, and those can be moved into a new shell of the same pattern with a freshly cut blade. Because the electronics are unchanged, nothing needs programming, and the rebuilt key behaves exactly as before. A new key is the answer when the board is corroded, a button has died or the chip has been damaged. Car Key Replacement
Can spare keys be made for older vehicles without a chip?
Yes, and it is usually the most straightforward version of this service. A vehicle old enough to use a plain mechanical key has no chip to read or program, so the whole job is cutting a matching blade, either traced from the original or cut to code, and testing it in every lock the first key opens. Spare Car Key Duplication
What should I have ready before a key fob programming visit?
The vehicle's identification number, proof that you own or are authorized to use it, and an honest count of how many fobs exist for the car, working or not. Mention whether any fob is truly lost rather than misplaced at home, and whether the vehicle currently starts with the fob you do have. That picture lets the right procedure and parts be settled before work begins rather than partway through it. Key Fob Programming
