High Security Locks in Burlington

You jiggle the key a little and the old deadbolt opens even when the cut does not look quite right. If your worn key can do that, you wonder what a stranger with the right tools could do.

In plain words

High security locks are cylinders and deadbolts designed to defeat the methods used against ordinary doors. Inside the cylinder a second locking mechanism, usually a sidebar released by finger pins or rotating pins, has to be satisfied at the same time as the normal pin stack, which is what stops picking and bumping. Hardened steel inserts stop drill bits. The bolt is thicker and carries a hardened pin against sawing, and a reinforced strike ties the lock into the wall framing. Just as important, the key is cut on a patented blank that only an authorised person can have copied, so your key count stays known.

Sound familiar?

A colleague showed you a video of a lock being opened with a bump key in a few seconds. Then you went home and noticed your own deadbolt is the same style, bought at a hardware store a decade ago.

How the visit goes

  1. 1

    What the door is protecting

The assessment starts with a question rather than a tape measure: what is behind this door, and what has made you think about it now? A front door on a family home, a stockroom with prescription drugs and a server closet in an office carry different risks and deserve different levels of hardware. The locksmith also asks who has keys today and how sure you are of that count. Those answers decide whether the right answer is a graded deadbolt with a controlled key, a laboratory-rated cylinder in a heavy lock body, or a small keyed system across several doors. Spending goes where the risk actually sits.

  2. 2

    Heavy hardware for commercial doors

Storefront, warehouse and office doors take heavy-duty lock bodies rather than residential deadbolts. Depending on the door, that means a commercial deadbolt or mortise lock with a hardened cylinder guard, a free-spinning collar that defeats wrenches, and a laboratory-rated cylinder inside it. Narrow aluminium doors get a deadlock made for their stile. The locksmith fits the lock to the existing preparation where it is standard, adjusts the strike in the frame, and confirms that any exit device or closer on the same door still works exactly as before so people leave easily while the door holds from outside.

  3. 3

A key plan that survives staff changes

For a business, the handover includes a key schedule showing every cylinder, every key number and who holds it. When someone leaves, their key comes back and is struck off; if it does not come back, you know exactly which doors it opened and can decide whether one cylinder or several should be repinned. Because the keyway is restricted, a departed employee cannot quietly keep a copy. New hires are issued a numbered key against a signature. The plan lives in a folder or spreadsheet, and the locksmith keeps a matching record so the two can be reconciled whenever you like.

What affects the quote

  1. 1

    Strike and frame reinforcement

A reinforced strike with long screws is modest work on a healthy frame. Deepening the pocket, filling split wood, fitting a jamb plate or a wrap-around reinforcer adds materials and time.

  2. 2

Exit devices and closers on the same door

Where a commercial door carries a push bar or closer, the new lock must work with them, and adjusting or replacing that hardware is part of the same visit.

  3. 3

    Number of doors

Each door gets its own cylinder or lock, strike work and testing. Several doors on one keyway share the setup cost of the key system but add hardware and time per opening.

High Security Locks: questions

Advice · (289) 816-4986

Will the new cylinder fit my existing locks?

Usually. High security cylinders are made in the common formats: key-in-knob and lever, rim, mortise and interchangeable core, and many are designed to drop into popular residential and commercial locks. The locksmith identifies your format and confirms fit before ordering. Where a lock is an odd size or in poor shape, a matching lock body is fitted instead, and the door preparation is reused wherever it is standard.

What is the difference between restricted and patented keys?

A restricted keyway is one the manufacturer supplies to a limited set of dealers, so blanks are harder to obtain but not legally protected. A patented key design is protected by a patent for a fixed term, and making or selling the blank without permission is unlawful during that time. Patented systems give the firmer control; restricted ones give a useful step up. The locksmith explains which your chosen line uses and when any patent expires.

How long does the installation take?

A cylinder swap with new keys on one door is a short visit. A new deadbolt, reinforced strike and frame repair takes longer, and several doors keyed to a plan take longer again, mostly in bench time pinning cylinders. The locksmith gives you a realistic estimate once the doors have been looked at, because the frame condition and the door preparation matter more than the count of locks alone.

What the census means at the door

47%

Homes of every age. About 47% of homes in Burlington were built in 1980 or earlier, according to the 2021 Census.

In neighbourhoods with a mix of older and newer homes, the finishes on the doors vary widely: aged brass, satin nickel, matte black. A locksmith serving such an area keeps a range of finishes so replacement hardware suits each house.

50%

A mix of homes. Single-detached houses make up about 50% of homes in Burlington (2021 Census).

Where housing is mixed, the same street can hold a solid wood front door, a steel townhouse door and a metal-clad suite door. A locksmith fits each with hardware suited to its construction, so every neighbour ends up with a door that locks properly.
